Alevi Encyclopedia Statement on Recent Developments in Syria

As the Alevi Encyclopedia approaches publication, we are deeply concerned by the recent escalation of jihadist violence and repression against minorities – particularly Alevis – as well as democratic and secular groups in Syria. The Alevi community has endured centuries of persecution, massacres and discrimination. The ongoing atrocities against Alevis in Syria underscore the critical importance of international solidarity and the preservation of Alevi knowledge, memory, and spaces for future generations.

Alevis have historically faced both physical and epistemic violence—systematic threats that aim to erase their existence and identity. The Alevi Encyclopedia remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard and transmit Alevi cultural heritage, standing in solidarity with all institutions and individuals—particularly within the European Alevi diaspora—who have voiced their concerns on this issue. Together, we emphasise the urgency of protecting Alevi history, culture, and rights in the face of these ongoing challenges.
