I am a Reader (Docent) in Sociology at the University of Westminster, specialising in sociological theory, the sociology of religion, suicide and transnational migration. I obtained my PhD from the University of Essex, where my research focused on suicide within the Alevi Kurdish community in London. My work on suicide among Alevi-Kurdish youth was awarded the British Journal of Sociology Prize. Since 2010, I have collaborated with Dr Celia Jenkins to explore identity issues within the London Alevi community. Together, we have partnered with the British Alevi Federation to design and integrate lessons on Alevism into the Religious Education Curriculum in British schools. Our joint efforts have significantly advanced the field of UK Alevism Studies through various publications and the organisation of Biennial International Conferences on Alevism Studies at the University of Westminster. Additionally, I serve on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Alevi Encyclopaedia.
