Bağlama (the most important musical and ritual instrument)
In this section, Pir Erkan Çanakçı discusses the instruments that occupy a central place in Alevi belief and musical tradition. In particular, bağlama/tembur, kopuz, kıl kopuz, bowed and plucked instruments, balta tekne, frets, tezene, and the bam string are addressed as instrumental concepts; explanations are also provided on the etymology of the terms bağlama and tambur. Pir’s narrative offers a rich perspective on the historical and ritual meanings of these instruments. This recording demonstrates that Alevi musical culture functions not only as a performative practice but also as a bearer of sacred knowledge.
