Notes and Practical Information for Authors

Notes for Authors & some practıcal ınformatıon

I. Article Submission Guidelines

1. Language and Target Audience

• Interdisciplinary Accessibility

Each entry should avoid remaining confined to the technical jargon of a single field. Instead, it should be accessible to readers from various disciplines such as history, anthropology, theology, and sociology.

The text should explicitly articulate interdisciplinary contexts—such as the historical, social, and mythological dimensions of a ritual—where applicable.

• Writing for the Community: Internal and External Readers

Entries must be comprehensible to individuals from Alevi communities with diverse backgrounds in age, education, geography, and belief affiliation.

Authors should write with a dual awareness—addressing both specialists in the field and readers unfamiliar with Alevism. Locally embedded concepts should be related to broader, universally intelligible frameworks.

• Conceptual and Terminological Clarity

Concepts, figures, events, and geographical terms should be clearly defined for readers encountering them for the first time.

Terms must be briefly explained when first introduced, and wherever possible, linked to relevant encyclopedia entries or glossary items.

• Cultural and Linguistic Sensitivity

Given the multilingual readership, local terms (such as dede, ocak, talip, Raa Haqi) should be presented in their original forms with clear explanations.

Language that is derogatory, reductive, orientalist, or exclusionary must be strictly avoided. When presenting differing views among Alevi traditions, pluralism and respectful tone must be maintained.

• Engagement with Oral Culture

One of the unique features of the Alevi Encyclopedia is its effort to record memory and knowledge rooted in oral tradition. Therefore, in addition to academic references, data obtained from fieldwork, interviews, or oral testimonies may be included—provided that the source is clearly cited.

When narratives, myths, idioms, or deyiş are used, they should be accompanied by translation or explanatory context.

• Holistic and Inviting Style

Entries should aim to actively engage readers by providing conceptual framing while also opening space for interpretation.

Each entry should be structured to lead the reader toward related entries, new questions, and further areas of research.

2. Recommended Structural Format

Each entry must follow the thematic structure outlined below:

  • Title: A short, clear, and descriptive heading.

  • Summary: A brief paragraph summarizing the core argument of the entry (maximum 500 words).

  • Subheadings: The text should be organized under subheadings to enhance clarity and readability.

  • Conclusion: A brief evaluative synthesis that summarizes the discussion and encourages further exploration.

  • References & Further Reading: Properly formatted citations. Authors may also include suggested additional readings.

  • Endnotes: If present, any notes included in the main text should be compiled as endnotes at the end of the entry.

3. Formatting and Length

  • Format: All entries must be submitted in Word (.docx) format, using Times New Roman font, 12-point size, and 1.5 line spacing.

  • Length: Recommended length is between 200 and 2,000 words. The maximum allowed length is 5,000 words.

4. Referencing and DOI Use

  • All in-text citations must follow the Alevi Encyclopedia’s official Citation and Bibliography Guide.

  • Footnotes are not allowed; authors must use endnotes.

  • When available, DOI numbers and accessible links for sources must be included.

5. Thematic Categories

Each entry must be tagged with one or more of the following categories:

  • History

  • Geography

  • Anthropology

  • Sociology

  • Politics

  • Economy

  • Theology

  • Mythology and Oral Culture

  • Violence & Collective Memory

  • Art

3. Use of Real Names

Authors must use their legal names in all submissions. Pseudonyms are not accepted.

4. Post-Publication Revisions

Authors may revise their published entries in coordination with the Editorial Board. All changes will be documented within the entry.

5. Multiple Entries on the Same Topic

When a topic is broad or contested, multiple entries by different authors offering varying perspectives may be published.

6. Concept Groups and Thematic Scope

Entries may focus on:

  • Individual concepts (e.g., semah, ocak, cemevi)
