Ocak-Based Alevism, Cemevis, and the Reconstruction of Tradition II
This video emphasizes that the rank of pir can only be attained through being raised within an Ocak, and it opens a discussion on the source of traditional authority in Alevism. While outlining the spiritual, ethical, and pedagogical dimensions of being trained in an Ocak, the video questions how cemevis can re-internalize this ancient form of cultivation.
It examines how the Ocak system and cemevi practice can be reintegrated without excluding one another, and what concrete steps are needed to transmit tradition into the contemporary world. In this way, the continuity of the Alevi path and the question of the source of authority are critically problematized and discussed.
This recording was made on 10–11 May 2025 at the Dortmund Alevi Cultural Center (DAKME), within the framework of the Pirler–Analar Workshop organized for the Alevi Encyclopedia project by the Rıza Şehri Academy.
